Includes printed pay forms completed in manuscript, dated Aug. 28, 1826, of the D.M.C. Upper Store to Jonathan Kimball for labor at Factory No. 1; printed checks, Aug. 4 and Aug. 16, 1827, of the Dover Bank; a letter, May 15, 1828, from John K. Pickering, Portsmouth, N.H., to William Shimmin, treasurer of the Dover Manufacturing Co., about financial problems relating to the failure of the company; and a letter, May 7, 1828, from William Fettyplace, Salem [N.H.?] with a bill for work done. Also includes freight receipts, 1850 and 1877, issued to Cocheco for items to be shipped by the Boston and Maine Railroad, and a receipt, 1876, for items received of Boston Dyewood & Chemical Co. Also contains receipts and checks, 1868-1898, from Lawrence Manufacturing Co., Lowell, Mass.; and one from the Howel Cotton Co., Boston, dated Jan. 7, 1898.

The first textile mill in Dover, N.H., the Dover Cotton Factory was chartered in 1812 at a site on the Cocheco River and was known as the "upper factory" [Mill No. 1]. Further expansion occurred at the lower falls in the early 1820's and again in 1825 when a calico printing works was included. In 1823-1824 the mills were renamed the Dover Manufacturing Co. In 1827 the print works incorporated as a separate enterprise and became the Cocheco Manufacturing Co., which purchased the debt of the D.M.C...
